The Gallery - Still Life with Hat

Tara set us "Still Life" as the subject for The Gallery this week, and it's probably the hardest thing she's set.  I wanted to take fruit, or flowers, or a skull, or a flayed ox.  But I lack the props, the camera and the talent.

So I thought I'd give you one of my hats.  This one, to be precise.  Surrounded by the detritus of a millinery workshop.

It's still. It's my new life.  It fits...

But it still felt wrong.  So I resorted to Google.  And found this:

And if Van Gogh can put a hat in a picture, so can I.  So, ladies and gentlemen. I give you:

Still Life with Hat and Horrid Worktop (2010)

Oh, and the hat? I  made that one too.

Still Life with Yellow Hat (1885) by Vincent Van Gogh.  Picture from vangoghgallery.com.  Thank you.

  6. What a great idea! Love how you have adapted the original to include everyday objects from your own life, like the spoon etc - instead of just copying "word for word", as it were. Do you really make hats? So talented.

  16. Golly! Look at all those lovely and flattering comments. Thank you all so much, especially for saying nice things about the hats. The website and business are under construction.... so watch this space (although I wouldn't recommend holding your breath).

And in answer to a few specifics:

Yes Julie, I really do make them... I love it, and I'm hoping to turn it into a pocket money maker. I'm glad you liked the little touches too. Lacking a Meerschaum (sp?) pipe, I thought the freebie spoon was a nice touch. Glad it was appreciated!

And Deer Baby - haven't seen it, but I'll have to look out for it now... although I don't think Accessorize have much to worry about!

Oh and PM, having seen a friend (and fellow milliner)'s new website, have been having doubts, so thank you for the confidence boost x

  23. And the blue flame hat is out of this world. I would totally wear it every day if I had one like it. It would make me feel like a rock star.

I know. I'm sorry. I hate these word recognition, are you a robot, guff things too, but having just got rid of a large number of ungrammatical and poorly spelt adverts for all sorts of things I don't want, and especially don't want on my blog, I'm hoping that this will mean that only lovely people, of the actually a person variety, will comment.

So please do. Comments are great...
